bilgersrocks

Troop 44 held a nature themed campout at Bilgers Rocks in Grampian, PA, October 23rd through the 25th. The campout started out extremely wet with downpours most of the night on Firday. After the showers cleared Saturday morning, the Scouts had a great time climbing around and exploring the rocks. The highlight for many of the Scouts was climbing through the well know Ice Cave. Other activities included finding the Christmas Geocache and completing an Earth Cache that required us to locate specific cracks in the rocks based on GPS coordinates and measure them. We also learned about how frost wedging actually was causing the cracks to grow each year.

Perhaps the other highlight from the campout was learning which fire starters work best in wet weather. Luckilly there was a large supply of Hemlock and Yellow Birch which helped to get fires built, so the patrols could prepare their culinary delights. In our photo gallery you will get to see some of their creations including chicken alfredo, italian sausages and beef stew.

beachjam

Troop 44 attended Morey's Pier's Beach Jam campout in Wildwood, NJ on September 26th & 27th. There were over 1000 Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and Venturers in attendance. We camped out on the beach next the amusement park and boardwalk. The Scouts were able to ride all of the rides and take the tram up and down the two mile boardwalk that had shops and vendors of practically every kind imaginable. Also on the boardwalk was a classic car show for the Scouts to check out.

In the evening we attended a beach bonfire and Scott Yarger represented the Troop in a Guitar Hero Tournament on the Boardwalk. Scott made us proud by winning the tournament for which he was presented with an electric guitar by the business holding the tournament.

It was one of coolest trips our Troop has been on, but it did come to an end early when we woke up to about 6 inches of water in our campsite due to heavy rain. Other units did have it worse with more than 12 inches of water. Everyone’s gear was soaked so we departed for home early.
